[a meeting between you and a homeless man you find sleeping on the floor of the laundromat] I'm nodding off again, waiting for my laundry to be done. The hard plastic chairs seem designed just so that the moment you doze, you start to slide out of them, threatening to dump you unceremoniously on the floor. Having to wait, seats uncomfortable and glaring flourescent lights, always drives me crazy. A man comes in, pushing a shopping cart, and pushes it into the corner, and pulls out a bag of clothes. He puts them into a washer and starts it with a handful of change from his pocket. He then sits on top of the washers. He lays down, and I hear snoring quickly after. It's warm in here, at least, and for a moment, I realize he's completely ignored where he's supposed to sit, and gone for high, dry, and relatively comfortable. I'm still dozing in the slippery plastic chair, startling every time a dryer buzzer goes off or I slide too far in the seat. The man who own the laundromat comes in, carrying a basket full of little cartons of detergent and fabric softener, and when he sees the man sleeping on the washers, you can see his blood pressure change. He bumps his basket against the snoring man, gently only once, then several more bumps, this time callous. "Wake up! You can't sleep here." The man rouses quickly, and slurring says "Doing laundry" The owner is yelling "You must go! Go!" and pushes him with the basket again. The man stands and hops down quickly. The owner pushes him toward the door, and the man looks distressed, his laundry is still washing, the owner of the laundromat now between him and his things. "I'll call the police." The owner angrily points to the sign saying "No Loitering", and pushes his basket against the man again. The man looks panicked, and sidles out the door and out around the corner. The owner glares around the room and fills the detergent dispenser, then goes out again, as quickly as he came. The man doesn't come back, not that I see. I'm wide awake for the rest of my laundry time, and I leave as quickly as I can, my clothes still damp and not wanting to wait for the last quarter's worth of time on the dryer.
