[10: a penny on the sidewalk] Jamie liked the house; the city was nice, but the farm was a lot more fun. Aunt Helen was strange, but nice. She didn't talk much, but she let Jamie run around as much as she wanted, and didn't worry if she didn't check in every few minutes. Her mother mostly stayed in her room. Jamie brought her lunch and dinner, and she'd sit on the bed and brush her hair if she'd let her. "Penny on the side walk, pick it up, good luck all day long." "What was that, mama?" "Shiny penny, buy a candy at the store." Jamie sighed. It was always hard to tell if she was talking to her, or just talking. She left the tray of food on the bed, and waited just long enough to see her mother pick up the fork, and she closed the door. She sat on the porch and watched one of the cats stalk something. "What are you up to today?" Aunt Helen actually asking about her was unusual. "I suppose I should take care of those weeds. Then maybe go walk in the woods." "Mind the poison oak." "I always do, Helen." "And stay out of the Josefson's" "I always do." Everyone stayed out of the Josefson's. A hundred acres next to the farm, and a driveway that was overgrown, the corner of the house you could see was falling down. People told stories that they never left the property, and would shoot anyone who came down the driveway.
