[5: 4th of July] Jamie slipped away from the parade preparations and into the cool library. Too many people, she thought. The silence of the library was a relief. She slipped down to the basement rooms and pulled out another dusty volume. She heard footsteps behind the shelf, and peeked into the next row and saw a couple eyes peering over the top of the books back at her. "Oh, hello." "I thought I'd be alone down here, where it's cool." The voice sounded like a young man, and she thought she heard an accent. "Yeah, me too," she said. She thought, I was here first. Go away. "I'm Ivan. Sorry to startle you." "It's okay." It'd be more okay if you go away, she thought. "I came looking for records. Trying to find who my parents are." Okay, boy, you got my attention. Maybe you can stay. "Oh?"
